Does God have a Purpose for My Life?
“Does God have a purpose for my life?” That alone is such a power thought. According to the Bible, He does have a purpose for your life. What happens in your life is of great importance to our Heavenly Father.
It is God’s Purpose. Not Our Purpose.
I often hear people talking about their purpose in life. We need to understand that it is not our purpose, it is not for us. It is God’s Purpose.
What are you working for in life? Are you working for materialistic things? Are you trying to achieve the life of ease, comfort or pleasure for you and your family? These are all good things to achieve, but if that is all that motivates you, then you a missing the point. We were born to live and worship to serve the living God. It should not be our purpose that we live for. It should be for God’s Purpose.
“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.” (Acts 13:36 NIV)
David had served God’s purpose, not his own purpose. Sometimes we end up searching and serving our own purpose instead of God’s purpose. We need to shift our thinking from finding our purpose to finding God’s Purpose.
So how do we find God’s Purpose?
Finding God’s Purpose
Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take. (Proverbs 3:6)
God had used Moses to do the impossible, part the Red Sea. When Moses reached the Red Sea, he could have quit. He could not see the path that God was wanting him to take, yet he trusted that God would pave the path for him to take. Sometimes when we are faced with obstacles in our life, we give up. We start to wander aimlessly. We need to seek God and find our path, find God’s purpose for us.
- Turn to the Bible: The primary way God speaks to us is through the Bible. Start by digging into the scripture. Remember that we are created in his image so his life will reflect many character traits that we should seek in our daily lives.
- Pray for His Guidance: Ask God for direction and listen for His voice. God wants to give you a purpose. He wants to bestow divine wisdom on you. He desires you to have a joyful, ambitious, purposeful life. Ask God for purpose and trust Him to give it to you.
- Find your gifts and strengths: God has given each of specific gifts and strengths. We need to learn how to use or gifts and strengths to benefit God.
- Listen to your passions: Your gifts are the signs to where God is directing you, but your passions are going to be what moves you in that direction of God’s Purpose.
- Bring others into your life: One of the main ways God will help you find his purpose in your life is through others. You can’t serve God’s purpose if you are by yourself.
God want to give you a purpose. He wants to bestow his divine wisdom on you. He desires that you have a joyful, ambitious, and fulfilling life.
To serve God’s Purpose you must serve God’s People
Jesus came to earth to help us. Everywhere he went he helped people. By serving others, Jesus did what Heavenly Father wanted him to do. Jesus Christ came to serve, not to be served. God did not put us on Earth just to live life for ourselves. He wants us, just like Jesus, to serve his people.
Sometimes we are so busy trying to think of what God’s purpose for our life is that we immobilize ourselves and end up doing nothing. If you want to serve God’s purpose, you must start by serving God’s people.
When we serve others, it helps us to be more like Jesus. You are most like Jesus when you are serving others. When we shift our focus off of ourselves and onto others through serving, we start to see others as Jesus sees them.
When we serve others, it allows us to experience God’s presence in new ways. As we encourage others and they find healing it will also encourage us, and it also has the power to heal us.
Serving others also increases our own faith. God increases our faith by revealing new potential within ourselves. When we start to see what he can do when his power is at work within us, we start looking for the doors that he has opened for us instead of the doors that have closed behind us.
Serving is a form of worship. It is a way to express gratitude for what Jesus has done for us and to share the love and grace that we have been given.
Serving is good for your soul. Serving others is good for the mind and body and can even ease symptoms of stress and depression.
The Bible says everyone is called to serve God by serving others. The number one reason that we don’t have the time or energy to serve others is that we are too preoccupied with our own agendas, dreams, and pleasures. Remember this is not about us. It’s God’s purpose and we serve God’s purpose by serving God’s people.
Serve God’s People Today
Remember that David served God’s purpose in his own generation. We need to start with today. How can we serve God today? Start by getting involved where you are at now. Serve where you are at today. No matter how little or how small. Make your life count here and now.
Some people get stuck on the “Someday I’ll will..” or “Tomorrow I will…” scenarios. Tomorrow I will volunteer at the shelter. Next week I’ll start helping others. Someday I will write my book which will tells my story and my story will help others in the same situation. That’s all good for tomorrow and the future, but what are you doing today to serve God’s people.
All of us have something to give today. So How can you serve God’s people today?
- Post scriptures on-line for others to read. That scripture you post may be just what another person needed to hear.

- Donate what you don’t need. Look around your house and find things that you don’t use or need anymore. This can be anything from clothes to furniture to food.
- Be a friend. One of the simplest and easiest ways to serve God and others is by befriending one another.
- Share your gifts. God has blessed you with gifts and talents, he wants you to use them to serve His people.
- Invest in other people. Form relationships with others around you. Take a moment to ask them about their day, or to compliment them on their outfit. Or even just take a moment to listen to them.

Remember that nothing is insignificant when you serve God. He uses every little thing. None of it is in vain and useless.
Serving God’s Purpose

We were all born to worship and serve the living God. We were created to serve one another, love one another, and serve each other.
